Essential Tools for PC Users

My well loved, well used laptop died last week. I purchase a new one and as I was getting it back to a usable state, I opened a list of software I install after purchasing a new PC for my friends and family. After getting everything back to a usable state, I thought that it was pretty good list to share. So, here is my list of five essential downloads to get. The best part, they are all free.

T-Mobile Enters VOIP With "@Home" Service

Since much of the country isn't ready to part with their dear landlines in favor of a mobile-only life, T-Mobile [FRA:DTE] is convinced they can grab a slice of the action from the incumbent service providers by introducing a new service called T-Mobile @Home. The service uses a Linksys-sourced router that plugs into your broadband connection and proviced VOIP that can connect to your existing home phone. The pricing structure is cut-rate: $10 a month on top of your regular T-Mobile bill for unlimited calling.

T-Mobile Enters Home Phone Market

T-Mobile's @Home service promises to do what Vonage did before it, offer families choices for their landline service. The mobile phone company also plans to offer this choice at an exceedingly low cost -- only $10 per month.

Philips Portable VoIP Phone For Those On the Go

I wrote several months ago about a device called MagicJack. It's a VoIP adaptor for those looking to use their own home phones as a VoIP phone. I got a lot of emails from people stating that they were looking for a more portable and mobile solution. One they could use with a laptop from their car, in the field with a wireless card, from a convention floor or from a hotel room. And it had to be small, portable and low cost. I think I found a perfect solution for you.

Magic Jack...It's Magically Delicious

I have tried it all. Skype, Vonage, even VoIP from my ISP. Still, none were as easy as promised. Skype required me to purchase a expensive USB headset, Vonage required their equipment and my ISP had too many contracts. All I have wanted is true plug and play VoIP with my own telephone.

FedEx Delivers

Not. But it wasn't their fault. How could they deliver, since the office was closed. The delivery person left a perfectly legible hand written tracking number on the delivery slip. I called FedEx (Sunday at 5 PM) and was assured after a fairly long game of IVR, that they were planning to deliver before 6PM tomorrow (by default). The person asked for a phone number which I provided. In the beginning of the call, I was given the choice between French and English. The 0820 number is billed at about $0.18 per minute. The call lasted 4.5 minutes.

Why the SMS difference between Europe and the USA?

Is there some deep socialogical reason why here in Europe, SMS technology has been embraced where in the USA, most people have no time for it? In most European countries, you can get regular cordless and corded home phiones that send and receive SMS, yest apparently this doesn't even exist in the USA.
