Why I Write Like a Pre-teen Girl in Emails, lol ;-) !!!

Those individuals who know me only through emails must think that my parents are Mr. Rogers and a double-espresso. Recently, my correspondences have had more winks, lol’s, and exclamation points than a Twilight chatroom. As unrepresentative as this is of my low-key, Birkenstock-wearing mannerisms, I learned long ago that if my words could misconstrued in an email, they would be misconstrued. Brief, efficient emails were taken as aggressive or pretentious. Or worse, an attempt at sarcasm would go completely unnoticed, and I’d appear downright mean.

Postal Strike Returns Brits to Old-School Tech

For old-fashioned letter writers like me, the past few months have been pretty horrid, what with the U.K.'s postal strike. Despite yesterday's news that the unions and management of Royal Mail have decided to suspend the strike until the New Year, a couple of pay checks have gone missing, not to mention a credit card payment--which resulted in my card being suspended. Many of you will no doubt be wondering why a tech writer doesn't pay all her bills online. Answer: because I'm an awkward bugger.

iPhone Poised to Snap Up More Business Users?

The iPhone may or may not be a success in China, but some analysis just out suggests it's actually doing pretty well in the enterprise environment. It may even more than triple its market share compared to last year.

Most People Use the Web to Talk to People Nearby

Ever use email to talk to the person sitting one office down? You're not alone. Most people use the Web to talking to people within their own city, not far-flung contacts, according to a new study by the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

The study says that while the Web has developed a reputation as a tool for geo-commerce and penpalling, the main utility has been to increase communications hyper-locally. In fact, the abstract says, "the volume of electronic communications is inversely proportional to geographic distance."

Want an iPhone for Work? New "Push" Gmail is Your Excuse

The Blackberry used to be the email weapon of choice for its instantaneous "push" email capability. Now Google is bringing that same rapid delivery to iPhone and Windows Mobile devices with its Gmail service, putting Blackberry's enterprise rule in potential jeopardy.
Five Brilliant Ways to Use Google Voice

The public launch of Google's new Voice service is imminent, and it's going to change the way you use the Web (to sign up for an invitation, click here). If you're currently a beta user, you already know how flexible and robust the service is. And while Google Voice's feature set is intuitive, here are five ways to mash up the service with other tasks and services you use every day, to get the most productivity out of your GV account.

What's the Carbon Footprint of Spam? Enough to Power 2.4 Million Homes

The majority of energy is wasted at the end user's computer in sifting through messages to find and delete spam.

What BlackBerry Addiction says About Obama's Brain

Obama may have won the election, but he’s about to lose his BlackBerry. During the campaign, Obama’s device was at his side more often than Joe Biden. Alas, change is coming: many expect that Obama will have to surrender his BlackBerry when he enters the Oval Office. We feel your pain, Barack. For many of us, going offline feels like cold turkey. Can email be addictive? Princeton University neuroscientist Sam Wang, co-author of Welcome to Your Brain, weighs in.

Google Saves You From Your Drunk Self

It’s the scourge of the new generation of computer-users. The ubiquity of electronic communications is so pervasive that sometimes you have access to the world when your brain has lost access to your fingers. Under those circumstances -- drunk as hell, or perhaps just high on life after seeing The Eagles -- you open up your laptop and scratch out an idiotic email that you invariably regret the next morning.

Nokia Expands Email Abilities; Buys OZ Communications

Around the smartphone industry, RIM [RIMM] is traditionally known as the email specialist. Now it appears that Nokia [NOK] might be trying to gin up a little competition for the Canadian Blackberry-maker by purchasing OZ Communications, a company that specializes in mobile messaging technologies.

The absorption of OZ, which, like RIM, is based in Canada, will allow Nokia's phones to achieve quicker access to instant messaging connectivity and Web-based email like Yahoo, GMail, AOL and Hotmail.
