When Coaching Crosses Over and Prescribes

When Coaching Crosses Over and Prescribes
There is a struggle among coaches and within the notion of coaching, itself, over the issue of “prescription.” Just how much prescription/direction is the coach supposed to provide the client? Is any suggestion a “leading of the witness?” It is not an easily resolved issue. And I struggle with it, as well. That’s why, for the most part, I tell my clients I provide a bridge between coaching and mentoring.

Sending Coaching Clients To Make Their 1st Impressions

Recently, I read a blog post by uber-blogger, Chris
Brogan. He made some great points on
how to navigate that difficult minefield, “the first meeting at an event.” After reading it, though, I thought, I’d
give my coaching clients more. Here’s
what more looks like. Think it’s
enough?

The OK Factor in Coaching

Everyone agrees coaching is about helping you perform better – whether it’s on the job, at home or on a playing field. You bring the talent, intellect and desire. The coach brings a process for focusing and releasing them. We all know this; it’s the mechanical notion of coaching. Underlying all performance improvement, though, is the notion of whether or not you feel whatever success you achieve is OK.

This Saturday’s New York Times featured a front-page story about how the recession is prompting some people to start their own businesses
instead of looking for new jobs. It’s an encouraging story if you’ve
ever considered the option of creating your own venture, large or small.

The Senator, The Coach, The Director - Advise & Consent

One job of the U.S. Senate is engaging in, is approving the key advisors to the President. Some aspects of this process parallel the roles played by board of directors’ search committees and executive coaches. The tasks and the results are generally considered providing advice on and consent (affirmation/support in the case of coaches) to key executive nominations. Advice & consent is the process that focuses on the qualifications/capabilities of the candidates for top leadership jobs.

1) your contract with the company and the agreement with the person you are coaching may have to be revised in light of new (or anticipated) organizational challenges. Be proactive and be the FIRST to suggest any re-alignments;

Resolved, that for the year 2009, I, _______________, will ______________ ______________________________________________________________.

It’s that time of year again. Lots of people are making resolutions. But study after study tells us that most New Year’s Resolutions don’t last. It’s not for lack of good intentions. Then why do they fail?
