2009: The Year Gadgets Stop Being Life Add-Ons?

I was reading about Vuzix's new VR projection glasses--actually looking pretty snazzy, versus a prop from Star Trek--when a thought struck me. It seems that the gadget as a nice-to-have bolt-on to modern life is dead. Instead, the gadget as a ubiquitous, fully-integrated, seamless augmentation to modern life has been born, and 2009 is when the transition may become complete.

Let me start with the technology.

Rehearsal Can Make For More Effective Leadership

One of the great prevailing myths in the workplace is that our time is actually planned. In truth, our day is a series of interruptions and surprises. The best-laid plans give way to spontaneous conversations, debate, and decision-making. Unanticipated external influences demand adaptation. Simply, we are improvising much more than most of us realize.

Reframing Authenticity

Authenticity is a popular topic amongst leadership pundits. Unfortunately, much of the dialogue has been misleading, absent the critical conversation on role and characterization appropriateness. To be authentic, is not just to be who you are, flaws and all, flaunting ‘self’ regardless of circumstance. Rather, it is about clarity of intention, and drawing on oneself to deliver on that intention.

The ‘when’ and the ‘what’ of leadership

‘When’ is different from ‘What’.

‘What’ suggests a thing, an item, an object, something that may easily be defined, observed, measured. ‘When’ suggests a time, an experience, a feeling. Whereas ‘what’ may be short-lived, ‘when’ is ongoing.

There is No "ing" in Brand

Unless you are using a branding iron or needle for tattoos, there is no ing in brand.

I make the mistake of using the participle branding and certainly allow others, but I see a problem. As personal brand concepts are becoming more widely discussed on and offline; and coaches are marketing personal brand services, I see a clear confusion between marketing and brand.

Let's start here in part one of a series on personal brand:

You have a market (maybe not always easily defined). Then you have marketing.

Brand Manager for Your Career

My days as an executive recruiter generalist provided insight into many businesses and disciplines. It was the Brand Manager role in many executives and some entrepreneurs I love to apply to the personal brand manager required in all of us.
