A Welcome Decision for Online Video Sites

Today, TechCrunch reported about the ruling in a case against video site Veoh: What The Veoh Decision Means For YouTube and Others.

Even though I do not run a video-sharing website (we do not allow users to upload video), I welcome the judgment for a few reasons.

50 Years of Progress

How does Generation Y look at the world? Um, you will probably be surprised, especially if you are an employer, an educator, or an entrepreneur.

Yesterday I had the unique opportunity to share a podium with Mark Bao, a 16-year-old high school student entrepreneur who has already developed and sold three Facebook applications. There are 50 years of history between us.

Are Record Labels Backward?

The Washington Post recently carried an article about Pandora's struggle to stay alive. The article raises some serious questions about the people running record labels.

Giant of Internet Radio Nears Its 'Last Stand'.

SoundExchange, the organization that represents artists and record companies, managed to get the per-song royalty rate for web radio to be doubled last year.

Bio and Interests: Bruce Cichowlas

I'm a "high tech inventor" sort that's been involved with several startup companies, some quite successful and others not, as is usually the case.

Currently I'm working at Orange Labs (part of France Telecom R&D) in Research, which is a little different for me, since I've more often been more on the "D" than the "R" side in R&D. Well, that makes it interesting.

Leveraging Usain Bolt's World Record Smash

Naturally as a Jamaican I am even prouder than normal with our achievements track and field at the Olympics so far.

Usain Bolt simply demolished the 100m world record, set by Jamaican-Canadian Donovan Bailey years ago. Then, just to silence any naysayers who have not followed our achievements over the years and claim doping, as if this is a team that has been dogged with doping for years like certain other major countries, the women went out and took all the medals for the 100m as well!

Yam and banana indeed.

User Growth First, Revenue Second? - Learning From Facebook, YouTube and Twitter

This cartoon summarises the concept very well - The Online Business Model To Get VC Money

Web ventures backed by VCs are notorious for focusing predominantly on acquiring users first and leaving revenue on the back burner during the early stages. The perfect examples are YouTube, Twitter and Facebook.

The Incubator: A Concept That Has Passed its Time

From time to time, I get calls from consultants doing feasibility studies for economic development directors about incubator projects in and around Phoenix, where I live in the winter. I get these calls because I've worked among startup entrepreneurs for twenty-five years, including a stint on the advisory board of the Arizona Technology Incubator, a project that failed in the late 80s or early 90s after not producing very many successful graduates.
