Inside PopTech's Solar-Powered Bag FLAP: Shining a Light Here at Home

The term "bottom of the pyramid" often conjures images of the poorest-of-the-poor in remote countries. But America has its own bottom of the pyramid, and with America Reimagined as our theme at this year's PopTech conference, I set out to find a community in the States who might benefit from the FLAP initiative.

Inside PopTech's Solar-Powered Bag FLAP: Testing Across Africa

August was setting up to be a crazy month. I knew this, so naturally I agreed to add to this the chance to use my AfriGadget network to help test the FLAP (Flexible Light and Power) bag project Africa. Thus began my whirlwind adventure, carrying 10 partially fabricated bags and 10 solar light kits through Ghana, Kenya and Uganda.

Mobility--on foot, by bicycle, bus, train or motor scooter--is a reality of life for one quarter of the world's population who live without electricity, most in extreme poverty.
Inside PopTech's Solar-Powered Bag FLAP: An Introduction

As Fast Company writers, we go to a lot of conferences. A lot of conferences. And the one thing that we can't stand to see as we wait in line to pick up our namebadges is the leviathan of crumpled canvas rippling away from the registration desk for miles, its plastic and cardstock innards oozing onto the carpet.

You know what I'm talking about. The swag bags.

Really, who needs another conference bag? Chances are, you already have hordes of them, too good to trash, too besmirched with logos to use, gathering dust in the back of a closet.
