Six Strategies to Thrive in the Conserver Economy

The latest economic numbers are in, and it looks like the economy may be bottoming out but has a long way to go before reaching anything like normal. It may be years before we see a return to where the economy was, if ever, driving the shift from the consumer economy to the conserver economy in which people are saving more, wasting less, and thinking of the long term.

As of today the Seattle Post-Intelligencer is a 100% online publication, with the final print run of its paper edition already complete. Does this move sound a death knell for physical newspapers?

We’re Not in Kansas Anymore, and We’re Not Going Back

Much was made of the stock market rally this week, with the Dow bouncing up 9%, and other economic news emerging that was viewed as positive. Having a little good news is refreshing, to be sure, even if the good news is really just news that wasn’t as bad as you thought it would be. It seems some of the big banks are not as bad off as we thought they were, although their problems are still immense, and the credit rating of GE only got knocked down a single notch instead of sinking further.

Bail-out or Build-out – Part 2

As the Presidential race nears the finish line - - with the candidates and voters both gasping for air amidst the ubiquitous onslaught of commercials on everything from lawn signs to Saturday Night Live - - there are no shortages of “new and improved” proposals for dealing with the current financial mess. Well, if politicians can constantly add to their repertoires, so can we.

Wall Street and the New Startup Economy

The vocabulary of this month's financial news has been dismal, with words like slumping, collapsing, and failure dominating the media lexicon. While the tumult has prompted credit scarcity, layoffs, and write-downs for many companies, the market for tech startups has remained a small and viable haven.

How Wall Street's Meltdown Will Affect Your Career

Wall Street's woes could creep into every aspect of the job market, but some folks have more to fear than others, career experts say.

If you're a freshly hired middle-manager with a company that's about to be swallowed up in a merger, make sure your resume is up to date. But if you're an accountant who specializes in corporate risk reduction, now might be your time to make a power move.
