He is now active -- either as a principal or consultant -- in a variety of startups, ranging from original content for mobile phones to electronic distribution of wellness information to new models for releasing music and films.

He was President/CEO of Wellspring Media, a company he co-founded in 1993 and sold in 2004.

I came across a great post by Umair Haque over at Harvard Business Publishing titled How to Build a Next-Gen Business Now.

He lays out five steps to build such a business but it was the fifth step that caught my attention because it spoke to our Realvibez Media business.

Playing Checkers: What the Meltdown Means For Store Brands

Not since Richard Nixon imposed wage-price controls in 1971 have brand marketers faced a point as pivotal as the one they face today.

It was Nixon’s failed attempt to control inflation by freezing wages and prices that led to the trade promotions that forever altered the relationship between retailers and brand marketers.

As soon as the controls were lifted, marketers wanted to make sure they would never be hogtied like that again. So, they artificially inflated their prices and started dealing back the difference as discounts to retailers.

Google to open "iBook" store

As a part of the long talked about project to scan all books and make them available on the web, Google has agreed to open an online store as a part of its $125MM Book Search settlement according to Silicon Alley Insider.

Anticipated to be an iTunes for books type of offering, the initial collection of books will consist of copyrighted, out-of-print books. The format for the books is currently unclear as is the timing of the service.

Web Display Ads Alive and Well

At a time when advertisers are wondering if the bloom is off the rose for web display advertising, some data points have come in that establish the contrary:

1) Web penetration continues to grow. While double digit growth is no longer possible with the large base, penetration is expected to go from the low to the high 60% range over the next six years according to eMarketer.

Business.com Case Study: Ignore The Laughter Of Other People

Every entrepreneur has had some person laugh at their idea, but few have had thousands or hundreds of thousands laugh at their idea.

I personally know someone who had the chance to invest in MTV at the inception but laughed at the entrepreneur and asked him why would anyone watch music on television.

Never let the naysayers dent your resolve, just make sure you can answer their question satisfactorily for yourself, your potential staff and your potential investors, even if you are the only one in all the above.

Breaking from Old Routines: Part 4 of the 12 Things I Learned about Business from Living in Asia

Across the street from my apartment is a barber shop owned and operated by a Mexican family.

It is a place where people from all over the neighborhood, including
children, come to talk and hang out. I see the roots of business in
that barber shop. It is a place where conversations happen. It is a
place where things are learned. Perhaps they are not learning about
collateralized debt obligations, but they arelearning things. It's a
community center.

Offering people a place to speak

Inspiring Others Is Important

I am currently in Jamaica and was invited on Tuesday to be a guest lecturer at the H.E.A.R.T. VTDI in Kingston by Dennis Howard, the UWI lecturer who brought me down in February to speak at the Global Reggae Conference.

It was a last-minute request but I was prepared and was able to speak to a class of students focusing on artist management in the music industry. The topic that evening was music videos and the Internet.

One of the students joined Realvibez.tv yesterday and wrote a blog post that gives a far better account than I could ever give. He wrote:

A Paperless Future?

In writing a blog about the convergence of media and technology, there are so many places to start. I’ve chosen to start with one of the oldest media known to man, paper.

Online Social Networks,..An Early Case Study Part 2

During my last posts, I discussed the use of meetup.com as a vehicle to tie traditional business models, in this case, a Chamber of Commerce together with a robust social networking site. We learned that the methods are time consuming, one must give before they get, and the results, initially, are difficult to measure.
