The Marcel Wanders Collection You Won't See at Target This Holiday

The latest fancypants designer to succumb to the hypnotizing pulse of the red bullseye is none other than our 2008 Master of Design, Dutch designer Marcel Wanders. When we first heard about the collaboration, we wondered if his Moooi mentality could even be adapted for mass production. Would Wanders' pearl necklace-wearing glam play in Minneapolis?

Front Design: Girl Power at the Milan Furniture Fair 2009

The 2009 Milan Furniture Fair was short on Big Bang moments, so it would be easy to overlook a lot of the doings--the preponderance of design made from repurposed scraps, the surge of handcrafted items, the out-of-the-blue fashion for trompe l'oeil, the offbeat marketing hoax with half a dozen big-name designers advertised for an event they had nothing to do with.

Milan 101: A Furniture Fair Primer

Each spring, the design world descends like a flock of starlings (glossy, dressed in black) on the northern Italian city of Milan for a week of revelry in honor of the Milan Furniture Fair (which those with Continental pretensions prefer to call "I Saloni," "the event" in Italian.)

An Ancient Japanese Aesthetic, Revived in Milan

Designers are rebelling against the notion of pristine objects. This year at Milan's Furniture Fair, that trend is on full display. But it's actually an ancient idea. For hundreds of years, Japan's dominant aesthetic has been wabi sabi, which values the impermanent, imperfect, and incomplete. You know wabi sabi, if you've ever been to Japan or seen Japanese design--it's the rationale behind the mottled, asymmetric design in traditional houses, pottery, and gardens.

Dishing with the 2008 Masters of Design

Marcel Wanders talked about the fairy tale that informed the design of the new Mondrian Hotel in Miami, and the fear he has to face down every time he begins a new project. John Maeda spoke of design's hidden return on investment -- its impact on an organization's human resources.

The occasion was Fast Company's Masters of Design gala, where Wanders and Maeda, both 2008 winners, held forth on the challenges and opportunities for design both in good times - and in rotten ones.

Listen in as they talk about Sleeping Beauty in South Beach, why digital design is often so unsatisfying, and the granny whose dying words to her granddaughter were, "F**k fear!"

Marcel Wanders Designs Miami's Mondrian

In early December, in that weird social vacuum between Thanksgiving and Christmas, there's no more glorious place to be than Miami. That's when the planet's art-loving high rollers, and the scenesters who follow in their rarefied wake, descend on the city for the annual festival-cum-bacchanal Art Basel Miami Beach.
