Live From PopTech: Bringing Design to Social Innovators

Every year (at least for the last two) I have had the honor of serving as part of the core faculty of the PopTech Fellows Program. This means I'm involved in the planning stages for this five-day retreat. No matter how much time I spend preparing for the program, I'm always astounded when I finally meet the fellows.

The Future of Health Care Is Social

Health care is a personal issue that has become wholly public--as the national debate over reforming our system makes painfully clear. But what's often lost in the gun-toting Town Hall debates about the issue is a clear vision about how medicine could work in the future. In this feature article, frog design uses its people-centered design discipline to show how elegant health and life science technology solutions will one day become a natural part of our behavior and lifestyle.

Is the Kindle Destined for SkyMall?

The hype around the iTablet is reaching a fever pitch with the Kindle increasingly looking like yet another example of Apple roadkill. If Apple can consume 32% of the profits in the mobile phone biz in less than three years, it should be no problem to swallow the nascent e-reader business in one quick bite.

How to Innovate, Step by Step

So how does a company become an engine of innovation? Although humans and the organizations they create are all unique and unpredictable in their strengths and shortcomings, most successful innovators follow some common steps in the innovation process. In his new book A Fine Line: How Design Strategies Are Shaping the Future of Business, frog design founder Hartmut Esslinger presents these steps in a broad and simple outline.

There is a growing dialogue within the design community around how to drive sustainable behavior change in areas like health and energy. With it has come an increased awareness that often seemingly trivial elements of a design--like a smiley face on a utility bill--have a lasting impact.

We used to assume that innovation was driven by access to the most advanced tools and resources. But the emphasis has shifted more recently to the role that scarcity plays in driving innovation.

Interesting how a shift in size / form factor can hold the fate of an entire industry (newspapers in this case) in its hand. Wow, the power of industrial design! I wish a larger screen could save the Boston Globe. But I doubt that is the case, at least not in the way people are hoping.

I am talking about the new Kindle, of course. I can finally take the iPhone out of every one of my presentation decks.

As Consumers' Demands Change, Designers Are All in the Behavior Business

Over the past few months, I've been busy riling up the design community with a theory that designers are now in the "behavior business," and I plan to explore this further in my posts in the coming weeks. Many of the challenges that businesses are facing cannot be addressed without a strategy for influencing consumer behavior in a positive and sustained manner, in areas like personal finance and preventative care.

Welcoming Guest Blogger Robert Fabricant: Designing for the Unpredictable

Camden, Maine in October is a pretty laid-back place. But when I saw Robert Fabricant, VP of creative at frog design, there last fall, he was a pretty distracted guy. The initiative he had been working on for more than a year, Project Masiluleke, was about to debut at Pop!Tech, the annual in-gathering of digerati and the folks who love them, and Robert was the man at the center of the action.

The Pan-Disciplinary Future of Creative Employment

"Take the thing that you think everyone would agree on, and turn it around." That's the advice Valerie Casey, green-eyed third child of Irish immigrants, got when writing her first high-school paper, on My Fair Lady. "I actually remember the thesis statement: 'Henry Higgins wished he was a woman.' It was too much! But I remember getting an A on it."
