I am an internationally published writer and journalist specializing in food, travel, fitness, and artisanal producers and craftspeople.
In the year since I went freelance, my work has appeared in the New York Post, MyMidwest (the in-flight magazine of Midwest Airlines), City Scoops, Oxygen Magazine and Running Times. Upcoming work is slated to run in Meatpaper and Gastronomica.
I wrote radio news for independent stations, developing skills at a local level, and then went on to write for a major news network. My work went beyond writing, to include voice editing and other aspects of production. Broadcasting’s strict timeframe added diligence to my skill set and I was asked to serve as a producer on a nationally syndicated radio program. Following that, I was invited to teach at a broadcasting school. I taught classes in news-writing, voice-editing and commercial production, and created a curriculum in commercial copywriting.
Teaching, combined with doing on-air work, live broadcasts, and radio production, gave Forbes a facility for putting people at their ease, conducting interviews and getting the full story in the minimum of time.
I have an undergraduate degree in anthropology and communications and master’s degrees in writing and performance – all from the University of London. While I was still in university, I was invited to teach workshops in Japan and Croatia, and was asked to perform in Canada and South Korea.
Since that time, I have devised and led workshops in writing, storytelling and creativity, teaching actors at the Neighborhood Playhouse and people with and survivors of cancer at the Creative Center, both in New York City. I've added photography to my skill set, contributing images to accompany articles and seeing my art photography hung on the walls of businesses and private homes in Manhattan.
I have edited a column for a US parenting magazine and taught postgraduate overseas students to write theses in English. These experiences deepened my respect for the editorial process and honed my ability to serve other people’s voices.
A native New Yorker I am currently a resident of Manhattan, London (since 1996) and Kansas City – but my friends would say I truly reside in transit. I have lived aboard tall ships, spent time with the San people in Botswana, and traveled across Asia, Europe and Africa. Furthering my practical knowledge, I have gained certifications in personal training, trained professional rescuers in first aid and CPR, and taken courses in coffee, wine and cooking.
In addition to my freelance work, I am currently writing a book set in Kansas City.
