The White House recently announced the winners of their most adorable contest yet: a youth video game competition. The 12 lucky 5-8th grade winners of the STEM Challenge will scoop up an AMD-based laptop and $2000 to their school or nonprofit of choice.
Many of the youngsters developed the games using scaffolding software, such as Gamestar Mechanic, to aid in the hard-coding process. The winners are not only remarkable for their age, but also for their social focus. From sustainability to math education, the game winners speak smartly about social causes in these interviews (click here). Winner, Jasper Hugunin, said, "I created this game because I wanted as many kids as possible to learn how to program."
"The first really interesting program I wrote was a program to teach me my multiplication tables," says Hugunin (1:28)
Says a press release: In "Robot Commander, players are
introduced to programming concepts as they
provide instructions to guide a robot through
increasingly challenging mazes...Jasper
