Photojournalist Lyle Owerko has collected shots of some of the most iconic portable stereos from a genre of street culture that began as early as 1983. His book, The Boombox Project, The Machines, the Music, and the Urban Underground is a beautiful catalog of that culture--from its people to their accessories. Here, in the wake of TDK's attempt to bring back the boombox, is a look at the history of those accessories. We've selected some of our favorites for this slideshow.
