There’s a small part of us, deep down in our brain, that can’t fully distinguish the world onscreen from our real lives. It’s why we cry at movies even though we know the dog doesn’t really die, and why so many dudes rocked Ryan Gosling’s silk Scorpion jacket from Drive this past Halloween.
But the merging of real life with the worlds of TV and movies takes on a whole new dimension when artifacts from those narrative worlds actually turn up on store shelves. The recent announcement that Staples arm Quill.com would launch Dunder Mifflin Paper Company brand paper isn’t the first time a fictional product crossed over to become a real brand. In fact, it’s not even the first time a product from NBC’s The Office has been made available for purchase (that would be Serenity by Jan, a line of scented candles you’ll have to be sharp on your eBay game to get your hands and nostrils on.) Below are ten other products, first seen in movies and TV shows, which pulled a corporate Pinocchio and became real.
This Cheeto-esque staple of Eric Cartman’s diet appeared in WalMart stores last summer. Frito-Lay produced 1.5 millions packs of the finger-staining treats as part of a promotional campaign celebrating the 15th anniversary of the show.
In order to spread awareness of hotly anticipated The Simpsons Movie in summer 2007, the film’s creators converted several 7-11s into Kwik-e Marts, where fans could purchase Simpsons-related products such as Squishees, Buzz soda, and Krusty-O’s cereal. Additionally, Duff beer is available for sale in certain South American countries.
