Designer Dan Golden draws inspiration from everyday life--and for a long time, he woke up every morning and popped a little pink tab of Paxil. "All of my work has a psychological underpinning," says Golden. "And this little pink pill spoke to that." Golden, who'd already been working on wallpaper and rugs, took the logical next step of producing rug designs based on the world's most popular pharmaceuticals. And this spring, his designs are being produced by Odegard, a top-tier rug-maker.
The first design was inspired, of course, by Paxil. Look closely, and in the pink tufts of Himalayan wool, you can see the split you'd find on the real pills. "I'm really hoping to appeal to everyone," says Golden. "I want your grandmother to be able to say, 'I love those polka dots!' And I want your friends to laugh at the joke."
Golden says the rugs are all based on drugs he's actually taken during his life. "I'm a little embarrassed to let everyone know that I've taken Viagra," he says. "I don't need it man! You've gotta make sure everyone knows that!" Sure, Dan.
"The Viagra shape is actually really interesting," says Golden.
An upcoming design, titled Grow, which is inspired by Propecia.
Focus, inspired by Adderall.
Happy, based on Prozac.
Golden grew up in the 1970s, raised by hippy parents--which is the subject of new designs he's creating for Odegard, which will be finished this month. "I kind of believe in the New Age movement," says Golden. "But I'm also skeptical about it. The scene in the 1970s was kind of twisted. Lots of lost souls and creepy people mixed in."
The New New Age collection is based on drawings that Golden, who studied painting in art school, did in Sharpie and and pencil. The rugs will be done in felt.
"You always wonder: Can people really be as nice as they want to be?" says Golden. "I think it's time we have a new New Age movement. One with really good energy."
