Susan Kare is an influential computer iconographer and partner at Susan Kare Design and Kare Prints. In 1982, Kare was hired to design typefaces and screen elements at Apple, where she created the iconic Chicago typeface as well as the icons featured on the original Macintosh computer. After leaving Apple, Kare worked as creative director of now-defunct computer company NeXT before founding her own San Francisco-based studio, where she has freelance-designed for hundreds of companies, including Facebook, Microsoft, PayPal, and IBM. In 2015, Pinterest hired her on to be product design lead. That same year, Kare’s preliminary icon sketches for the Macintosh were added to the Museum of Modern Art’s permanent collection in New York City.
