Richard Plepler is the chairman and CEO of HBO. Plepler has worked his way up at HBO since he started in 1992 as SVP of communications and advisor to the CEO. During his time as CEO, he has focused mainly on addressing the threat Netflix has presented and getting its own streaming service up to speed, unveiling HBO Now in early 2015. When Plepler was copresident, he helped the company surge in original programming, with popular shows like Game of Thrones and Girls. Plepler serves on the boards of the Asia Society and the New York Public Library, and is on the national advisory boards of the W.E.B. DuBois Institute at Harvard University and the Museum of the Moving Image. In 2014 at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity, he was named the Media Person of the Year, and in 2015 he won the International Emmy. Through his focus on expanding HBO's business and global reach, the company's subscriber list in the last two years has grown more than any other two-year period in the past 30 years.
