As New York City's first-ever chief digital officer, Rachel Sterne Haot was tasked with improving communication between City Hall and its 8 million constituents under Mayor Mike Bloomberg. Her team overhauled, brought Wi-Fi to public parks, held hackathons to create new apps for the city, expanded the 311 service to mobile and social, and more. She is now the Chief Digital Officer and Deputy Secretary of Technology for New York Governor Andrew Cuomo.
