The Scandal: In 1982, seven people in Chicago were killed after an unknown suspect took bottles of Tylenol extra strength capsules off the shelves, injected the capsules with cyanide, then returned the poisoned bottles to the shelves.
The Fall Out: Before the tampering, Tylenol controlled 37 percent of its market. Immediately after the poisonings, its market share dropped to seven percent.
Now: Tylenol products were re-introduced with tamper resistant packaging and sales people made presentations to medical professionals to restore their confidence in the product. Tylenol remains a top-selling painkiller in America, controlling about 35 percent of the market.
