One of the most frequently cited format wars was the loss of Sony's Betamax to JVC's VHS, which won despite Beta's better video and sound quality. Pundits maintain that Beta's loss resulted from its expensive players and tapes, as well as its limited recording time. However, a derivative of the format, Betacam, survived in video production and home camcorders.
