Steinvurzel took the garbage end of the orange and turned it into something both delightful and useful: a votive candle, made of 20 cents worth of soy wax, with a wick made from part of the peel. Not only does the candle use the part of the orange that would normally go in the trash, but it also eliminates the need for traditional votives, which require a metal casing. By Steinvurzel’s calculation, if 14 oranges cost $4, you could make 4.5 candles for one dollar.
