To get high performance one needs to measure the right things. What gets measured is what gets done. There must also be proper incentives to attain high performance results. People respond to incentives.

Fast Talk Response -

Maybe a question you need to think about is...
What are the costs of not staying late?
Promotions [Do only people who work 12 hour days get promoted?]
Competitive spirit [Does your level of competitiveness look low?]
Strong work ethic [Will people perceive you as a slacker for not putting in tons of late night hours?]
Team player [Will you be perceived as not being part of the team?]

If your level of effectiveness is high and known [there are low costs to leaving earlier than others because you are a top performer]there is little reason to put on a pony show by staying late.

How to get things done

"The only way to get things done is to START."

START Theory
How to get it done

Simplify - Basic focused idea or goal
Think - Use the brain and other tools to come up with solutions and ideas
Act - The way to get things done is with Action
Review - Results must be measured against the task or goal as success or failure
Tendency - Do more of what works and less of what doesn't

It is possible to start and never finish. But you must start in order to get it done.

People at any level of an organization can create solutions. What may lead to more quality solutions is closeness to customers or users. [Salespeople for example]
Consumers will tell you what they want if you ask them and listen to what they have to say. Then the individual employee [or group] may develop solutions for the consumer. Doing this successfully generally leads to delighted customers. The customer will gladly trade dollars for solutions.

Job Searching in Challenging Times

Job searching in challenging times

Firms seem to be very cautious in their hiring. They want top performers that create value many times their cost [wages + benefits]. They always do. But now, the time from the first job post to hire seems longer than usual.

Some of the tools being used in my search...

1. http://www.indeed.com/

2. http://www.oodle.com/job/

3. http://www.careerbuilder.com/

What are some job search sources you use or have used in the past?

Comment on Node ant

It does not take much to blog. There are probably millions of blogs out there where the writer just knows how to type.
To be successful and relevant in blogs takes much more than just being able to type.
At first look, most disagree with the idea that "You just need to know how to type to blog". Those who think that may be reframing the question to mean well or successfully. People blog for many different reasons. To do well takes much more than just being able to type.

How would one become better at writing/blogging without practicing the craft?

RSS - Is it the way of the future?

RSS feeds seem like they have been around a long time. At the same time most people have little knowledge of them. Just last month RSS feeds became more relevant to me. I set up feeds in the past, but did not understand how powerful they could be. Now specialized information comes to my little corner of the Internet. Before, I had some on my iGoogle page. Then somehow I stumbled on to Google Reader.
