My doctor used to head up the ER department in our local hospital. Feeling burnt out, he took a friend's advice and opened an innovative walk in medical clinic. Expanding quickly to 3 locations around the city, this physician utilizes a system which prints out the patient's prescription. He provides great service, availability, Spanish speaking staff, and most of all results without waiting in the hospital's ER.

Alex,

I agree. Truly great innovation is often derived from meaning. Example: the smallpox vaccine--an innovative though risky idea which sprang from the need for physical protection. Perhaps it's also a form of common sense.

This is not always the most lucrative path, nor the most notable, but sometimes those rewards follow--albeit at times posthumously.

Glenn,

Great article! Should this be addressed solely as a national issue in relation to the global problem, or can it also be addressed at a regional level--perhaps more effectively?

A point to ponder--it seems we help the entire world in many ways, but now we are indeed helping China with its environmental problems. A green author/blogger on my site-- www.BasilAndSpice.com has recently written about what the US EPA is doing to help China harness its methane from coalbed mining--known as the Methane To Markets Partnership. Read the blog here: http://www.basilandspice.com/living-green/united-states-helps-china-harn...

Together China and the United States are making an effort to curb global greenhouse emissions.

The world is changing, rapidly. Those who don't jump on the bus will get left behind. Let's face it, in our lifetime we've gone from a locally-focused community to a global one through digitization. Our next leader must be able to lead the way, and see the necessity of it, by setting an example himself. How he's leading his campaign is a notable indicator. My experience with the campaign (or lack thereof): http://www.basilandspice.com/journal/whos-winning-the-race-online.html

Obama's staff is savvy in the field of online political marketing. Other candidates have held to past and perhaps archaic philosophies regarding internet ads, newsletters, etc.. And yes, cleverly, a user generated link to Obama's idea "think-tank" has arrived, where you may add your own input: http://www.ohboyobama.com/
