Comment on Node ant

A false choice -- the two are not mutually exclusive.

A situation can never "make" a leader, per se, but it can certainly bubble up a leader's propensity to lead in some circumstances.

Also, in real terms, leaders have "vision," so that vision must exist in some fashion prior to an occurrence.

Leaders clearly DO make many situations occur.

The Leadership Myth

Many consultants, academics, and self-proclaimed management & leadership gurus perpetuate the myth that “Leadership” is some lofty, intrinsic skill that you just “arrive at” through timing, opportunity, and sometimes “birth.”. Those same experts will then explain how “management” is a basic, simple skill learned by reading books, attending classes, and being developed in a regimented fashion.

Comment on Node ant

Interesting comments. One of the challenges many hiring managers face is "time," and frequently we make a hire based more on expediency than on ability and 'fit.'

I frequently remind clients and colleagues, "Don't get stuck with a dog..."

You are searching for a valuable contributor; an able-bodied addition to your staff. You know -- or have a really good idea - what you need in the way of skills, knowledge, and experience.

You network, post, advertise, and collect.

Comment on Node ant

The dangers to me are straightforward: in times of economic scrutiny, we need employees to be thinking MORE, not less. A controlling environment may aid in the immediate task at hand, but from a downside, it also:

1. Limits an employee's growth, and subsequently their inherent ability to "do more (presumably 'with less')."

2.

Comment on Node ant

Interesting comments, and certainly sensationalistic. Frankly, however, I don't buy the premise that CEOs are personally and solely responsible for the economic conditions we're in today.
