I might consider a temporary job in another field if there is no immediate employment in my chosen field. However, the best career move is always to deepen your skill set - sharpening skills that make you more valuable to employers or broaden your career choices/options. It's axiomatic: Go deeper, get more out of your career.

If making it big is defined as the sum of the people you know, or social climbing, then having an active social life is foundational. If I buy your book, which you wrote on your own, I'm helping to make you big ... but are we having a social life? Perhaps I'm just quibbling. An active social life is healthy (but it's not H20) and I advocate building up a strong social network (especially if you're the solitary type).

In a recession jobs are last to get hit, yet are the slowest part of business spending to recover. This is the time to develop or revise an escape plan to insulate you from possible downturns or unforeseen changes at work.

Do you ever get the feeling that you're writing graffiti in cyberspace?

I get this disconnected feeling when I post a status update on Facebook, Twitter or LinkedIn. There's certainly an art to writing a one sentence blurb that expresses something about your life, perspective or the world around you. But is there a point to status updates? Is it merely a social convenience or could it advance your career?

A 360 degree review is a powerful way to do it because then you're not the only one - odds are if he or she's a bad boss your comrades are feeling that pain too.

Getting Paid for a Job Interview

Employers know the problem with great job candidates is that they usually have jobs and aren't actively seeking another one. And why should they? It's a hassle to send out resumes, shake the trees on a social network or chat-up recruiters.

Typically it's unhappy employees that seek new opportunities. Apart from these active job seekers, most employed workers are considered "passive" job candidates who may leave if the right opportunity finds them. Frankly, the grass is often greener elsewhere.

The cool iPhone ads are giving me tech envy, but I will wait for v2 to come out, which will help amortize my Blackberry and iPod investments ;-). As an independent business person I don't care whether the iPhone runs corporate apps, but I do care about battery life and a choice of carriers.
