'L' for Leadership

My favorite warm up for a leadership session is to ask participants to think of all the words they can that begin with the letter, ‘L’ that have anything to do with leadership. The usual response is a collective groan, suggesting this is a ‘dumb’ idea. However, within 10 minutes participants are surprised to discover how these words provide the perfect landscape to launch a leadership discussion. Here are a few special ‘L’ words. Listen, laughter, language, liberate, legacy, lesson, liaison, labor, limit, lonely and luck.

The 'When' and 'What' of Leadership

‘When’ is different from ‘What’.

‘What’ suggests a thing, an item, an object, something that may easily be defined, observed, measured. ‘When’ suggests a time, an experience, a feeling. Whereas ‘what’ may be short-lived, ‘when’ is ongoing.

Comment on Node ant

Jay, great, thoughtful response. I would agree...leaders need to take a stand, and that stand will best serve the system if he or she can remain positive, seeking growth, as opposed to a stand that reeks of victimization and blame. One might think taking responsibility is no brainer for 'leaders' and yet, in the real world those of us who work with leaders, know this is not the case. Leaders create the environment in which others reside....and consequently, it falls on their shoulders to create an environment where people can thrive.

Steven...like with all changes in behavior, learning to listen and be present must be self directed. So you are right that coaches and other similar folks could be of service here. I think the real 'change' happens when individuals recognize what is 'lost' by not being present, listening with intention. When the losses such as conflict that could be avoided, missed opportunities because new ideas and challenges are stifled ...then leaders may take notice. In live theatre, the audience is the final piece of the puzzle, the player that till preview night is silent.

Mark....your comment reminds me that most people associate beauty with the term aesthetic, but its root meaning, refers to the senses. In this context, Aesthetic Intelligence, means employing all our senses, the 5 plus the undeniable 6th, as felt experiences that lead to 'knowing'. This requires being truly 'present' - - self aware, accessible and available to scan, absorb and assimilate our experiences and shift our place of being and doing in real time.
