How thoughtful of the here-to-stay military/industrial complex!

We can now sleep and rest assured that the trillions of green dollars being spent with no visible ROI in security or resources are truly GREEN. For those on the receiving end of these green weapons- some of the enemy, some friendly or collateral casualties, it will be somewhat comforting for them to die knowing that an eco-friendly environment is being created for future generations who will not be there to enjoy it.

"If the surge of corporate power was going to leave governments relatively impotent, Hertz argued, then those corporations themselves needed to fill the void. "

Totally agree with the idea of getting employees to think strategically and holistically about the business they are in.

The holistic point of view of the business which can guide employees in their day to day action to gain results is too often missing. Is there a way that we can ensure that management and staff are on the same page when it comes to the big picture?

For decades now various American governments have been promoting the idea of free trade and open global competition. However when the rubber hits the road and the realization dawns of the unintended and unanticipated consequences of such an approach the US moves to tilt the world back to closed doors.

This is the moment of truth and if the so called benefits of free trade and global competition are to be realized then there may be a period of painful re-adjustment.

My impression is that higher tech television is in ascendancy with the proliferation of HD and especially of personal video recorders which allow for the skipping of commercials and viewing at your leisure.

The future may hold video by web as a channel for TV productions but I think actual televisions will remain the dominant portal even for web viewing. Commercial free television by subscription is a distinct possibility as technology allows commercials to be cut out of the viewing experience.

We often forget that the "global economy" in which there is a "slump" is an invention, process,artifact,mind-set,set of rules, set of customs, way of doing business that emerged out of the economically developed societies and cultures of North America and Europe (the West). As we have seen, even the idea of saving is very different in China than it is in the Northern cultures.

I read a number of newspapers regularly on-line and of course the NY Times is available completely, including archives, on-line at no cost. Still, being an old fart, I enjoy the experience of opening the door in the morning (even at -20C) getting my cup of hot coffee and pouring over a print edition of the national newspaper. Something about unfolding the large piece of newsprint, turning the pages, scanning the headlines and "boring into articles and opinion pieces makes this an essential ritual at the beginning of an information filled day.

Where does the buck stop?

In many places, starting with the Reagan administration right through to George W. Underlying all the mistakes is a neo-conservative world view that believes in free market capitalism and no place for the government or for taxes or to the common good. A great example is McCain's strong objection to the distribution of wealth, i.e privilege and power - the very heart of American democracy and the promise of a fair, well governed economy.

Self Inflicted is right. It is probably not a matter any longer as to whether this industry can recover. The mind set of the industry is so entrenched from CEO to line worker that it is hard to see a turnaround with or without government money- and Chrysler is the proof in the pudding. Over time the ancient world view, practices and policies of the industry brings its ailing companies back to the gas guzzling, ill styled, low quality norm.

Better to bid to be the off shore site for the Japanese and Europeans.

Obama has built an incredible, well organized, grassroots network across the US. You can imagine if he harnesses this organization for the collaboration necessary to effectively weather the economic storm. this kind of organization offers more hope than anything homeland "security" can.
