What's Your SocialStyle?

A week or so ago, I took a series of leadership and management training courses where I work. One of the tools we used was the Tracom Group's Social Style Self-Perception Questionnaire. It's all of 30 questions -- you have to select one of two options that detail how you see yourself interacting with the people in your life.

Comment on Node ant

I disagreed, but now I'm going to contradict myself. Everyone should and could write -- even if it's just for themselves and their own self-development and -analysis. So anyone should and could blog.

I'd add to Susanne's comment and add the phrase "for others" to her use of the word "well." Blogging doesn't have to be done for an audience, and perhaps there are some better blogs that are done assuming no one is reading them versus that there are readers.

Self awareness can be self limiting.

May First presentation: "The Power of Networks"

The good folks at May First / People Link (authors of book "The Organic Internet") will discuss the technical implementations and organizational implications of networks. They'll consider the new modes of political control, new conditions for political activism, and how remote asymmetry in communication and power has changed our struggles. Use the sneakernet to join us meatspace to discuss the flocking of the multitudes. $5 suggested donation.

"What Would Jesus Buy?" screening

Please join us in welcoming Reverend Billy to Bluestockings for an intimate showing of "What Would Jesus Buy?". Produced by Morgan Spurlock, the film follows the Reverend and his Stop Shopping Choir across the country as they preach and sing to help holiday-abused Americans find a new Christmas without products. And yes, it's fun to sit in a darkened room with both fair trade activists and evangelical Christians. Buy less, give more, change-a-lujah! $5 suggested donation.

Finally, Myers-Briggs!

You'd think I'd have taken the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator assessment by now, eh? Not so! But because I'm on a bit of a self-improvement kick so far this year, I decided it was high time. So this afternoon, I took the test through PersonalityDesk, which also offers several other assessment tests -- and perhaps more attractively, a telephone or email discussion of your results.

Fast Talk Response -

Yes. People would have to be slightly braver and more assertive face to face. It's easier to reach out to someone or express interest in them online because it's kind of safe and passive -- you can always not respond to their response. It's also easier to be playful, flirty, and suggestive online than off. But, yes. Without the Net, people would still date.

Office Furniture Porn

The new edition of Design Within Reach's Workspace catalog arrived in the mail yesterday. And I felt like I was receiving a porn magazine. The catalog is as well designed as anything they sell, and I'm slightly ashamed of our Allsteel Inc. cube farm -- we couldn't have gone with Herman Miller, even?

Fast Talk Response -

It depends. Was the person fired or let go from each or any job? Do the job changes show some kind of development path or direction? Were the earlier jobs taken as learning stepping stones to get to the later job?

Lesson One: Show Up

Last week, I got a phone call from the assistant for someone I didn't know. Apparently, he's a member of an organization I'm active in -- and he was calling area members in order to meet them and gauge whether there were any connections or synergies.

This person also appears to sell insurance, so I was somewhat skeptical, thinking that this was an easy way to check out potential sales leads. Regardless, I agreed to meet him for coffee yesterday afternoon.
