I've been working through Matt Miller's Tyranny of Dead Ideas, a fine example of new thinking. For example, caught between open markets and protectionism, he opts for better "protections" in areas like health care, pensions, etc.

A recession--or maybe this is a depression--is a wake-up call to everyone to take charge of your career. The fundamental issues in this networked economy should be clear. That includes an intelligent network that is more than an echo chamber, strategic management of one's own career, and an ongoing developmental program that will provide for opportunities--limited thought they may be--beyond your current job experience.

Cy: I couldn't agree more. Again and again those seem to be the issues in feedback. I'd two other issues: don't spend all your time thinking about the changes, take action, and double check that action. Then, go back and tell your boss what you're doing about his/her feedback. Self-advocacy is always necessary in today's highly networked businesses.
