 <description>&lt;p&gt;Our instinct is generally to resist and argue with the decision to reduce headcount.  In my experience, by the time we get around to making the tough decisions, our ability to make proactive decisions is past.  When tough times hit, it&#039;s better to acknowledge that we have to do things we&#039;d rather not do, but then get on with being the best leader we can despite the circumstances.&lt;/p&gt;

 <description>&lt;p&gt;It&#039;s a tough lesson that we have to learn as leaders when we make the choice to manage reality versus being managed by reality.  It was just the other day that one of members of my team and I were discussing how critical it is to decide how we invest our energy.  One easy way to be what you describe as &quot;reality-based&quot; is to simply get in the habit of asking yourself, &quot;do I want to give any energy to this?&quot;  It&#039;s amazing how many times in a day that answer is no.&lt;/p&gt;
