 <description>&lt;p&gt;As a female working in the Middle East it&#039;s also advisable not to shake hands automatically with locals, but rather to wait for the other person to initiate this. I had an embarrassing experience recently where I put my hand forward to an Omani gentleman in order to shake hands and he pressed his hands against his chest and told me that he did not shake hands with women.  Oops!&lt;/p&gt;
