Transformational leaders understand what they are up against (http://tinyurl.com/bmntun). They just don't care. Their focus is on their vision for what is possible and in Obama we also have a person who is likable and who has a powerful presence. Transformational leaders move towards vision in the face of present circumstances. He will encounter obstacles from the old guard yet something else is on his side... The Crisis we are in will grow deeper - not because of Obama but because of the bad habits we have formed.

William Strauss passed away in December of 2007 (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2007/12/18/AR200712...) yet his work on the Fourth Turning and Generations left behind a great legacy and foundation for understanding how we do repeat history.

Great commments and outstanding timing for this book. I have been working with the executives and the teams I coach to take on many of the same things Ram talks about here (see my blog entry: http://executiveskillworks.com/blog/127#more-127).

Leaders need to keep focused on what they are aiming to create while practically looking at how to support the organization to stay on its feet during tougher times. Don't give into fear - recognize its there but chose to be creative not fearful. Be honest with your employees and enlist their help!

Steve - glad to hear it's not that serious! You are clearly one of the most innovative leaders of our time. Steve I assume you saw the latest MacWorld Mag that has NYT's Tom Friedman saying: Steve Jobs should run GM. I would hate Apple to lose you AND given the stakes I like Tom's thoughts. We need innovation innoculated back in the car industry BAD!!! Not only to save the industry but to help the environment. Whether I like the idea of you leaving Apple or not - we need innovative - transformational leaders like you to help us out of this current mess!

I think it is funny this concept - "The Brand Called Obama." I suppose if branding was a concept during the time of Martin Luther King, President Kennedy, and Abe Lincoln - maybe they would win the award... what about Nelson Mandela? I think leadership is so rare - when we see it shines brightly. Barack is a visionary - a "transformational leader" as Collin Powell indicated. Is he just another slick politician who marketed himself well? I suppose time will tell. Yet, rather than a brand - we might have a great leader on our hands - that's my hope!

I do not think Obama's style is necessarily right out of the pulpit - his skills are much broader than that. If you look at key leadership competencies from most any well respected 360 - he has embodied true leadership competencies that go beyond his strengths as a communicator.
