Donovan, how long have you been lending to micropreneurs through Kiva? Can you talk at all about some of the people you've helped?

Philanthropy made easy for small business.

I recently read an article on philanthropy.com written by Nicole Wallace that had some exciting news in it for small business owners that would like to let their customers know about their philanthropic giving, while really impacting their fellow entrepreneurs in developing nations. Advanta, "one of the largest credit card issuers in the small business market." has partnered with a very interesting organization by the name of Kiva. Briefly, Kiva is a charity based out of San Francisco that connects investors with entrepreneurs in developing countries.

Going Green is Here to Stay

Energy independence, global warming and the negative effects of "business as usual" on our environment are driving consumers, investors, and business owners to the multi-trillion dollar "Going Green" movement. More than just a trend, going green is here to stay. Move over blue collar and white collar, "green collar" is moving on up!

BioDiesel fuel or food.

Companies like VABioDiesel are making strides in creating alternate forms of fuel from soybeans and grains. But food riots in Haiti and Egypt, and a strike in Burkina Faso bring to light the negative effects these innovations are having in the poorer areas of the world. The more farmers convert from growing food to fuel, the higher the price the poor will pay. Is it morally acceptable for the developed world to convert to using the traditional food of the poor for fuel? If not grain what other options are on the fuel horizon?

Fast Talk Response -

It depends on the innovations. I believe true innovative activity is a fluid process that rolls with the economic punches. In the event of an economic downturn you don't curb your innovations you ensure that the innovations are steered in the right direction. I.E. making your company more sustainable, finding solutions that reduce cost on your end, introducing products or services to the general population that they need DURING an economic downturn. A perfect example, rising oil prices are making us look at alternatives to oil.
