Much as I admire Thomas Friedman I don't agree with him here. What has changed is people's expectations on what can and needs to be done to the global carbon-based economy. Low oil prices after the financial crisis in late 2008 are linked to low demand due to the global economic recession. In a global recession most companies will be looking to cut costs and an integral part of that will be to lower their energy needs. In this recession the production and distribution system will be re-engineered in ways that lessens the world's carbon footprint.

Clearly the US has to get its own house in order before preaching to the rest of the world... It has to tame its addiction to oil and cheap credit... The sinking $US might help it tame its addiction to oil imports and move to alternative energy sources which will be a great benefit for the global environment... The current financial crisis might help the US to tame its addiction to imported credit/borrowings/savings... For the past 20 years and particularly the past 8 years of the Bush administration the US has become more and more addicted to cheap credit...

This is a global war... A war being waged against anyone who has debt... It is a war that is not being won by Wall Street or on Capital Hill... US leaders there are making matters worst as they pump more money into a system that is broken because it has had too much money pumped into over the past 20 years and particularly the past 5 years... We have all contributed to this financial mess... Now that the financial mess is infecting Main Street we will all begin to pay some price... Be in no doubt, you and me, are the front line soldiers in this war...

Get rid of the Fed Reserve and Bush Administration and start running the US economy as an integral part of the new global system. Nation-State entities such as the Fed Reserve no longer have the control they had in C20th because there is a new world order. Bush administration tax cuts were premised on the old theory of trickle down benefits - these never eventuated. Over the past 8 years the purchasing power of working families has declined not increased.

My C21st business model relies on this partially true. For global networked businesses it will surely be true. Those who do travel the globe will be experts who have to go to fix something not just for face-to-face contacts/meetings. C21st business models are less about relationships and more about connectivity so the need for face-to-face contacts will lessen and lessen very quickly. Videoconferencing is not and never will replace global travel. However, it will quickly become an active part of regional and local networked business models.

A few personal observations about this topic. 1) Facebook is not a bubble - it is the breakthrough platform for Web 3.0 Social Networking.

First and foremost this is a digital age issue not a Nation-State issue. Those who continue to use 'Nation-State thinking' tend to treat this as an immigration or national issue - it is not! Fortunately the world is flat thanks to the Internet. Thus the C21st challenge for US employers is to take full advantage of that fact and use the power of Web 3.0 social networking to help solve their employment needs. Jobs not filled?

Michael Arrington has raised what may become the classic C21st debate about Social Networks - that is the value of users versus customers. Gates (Microsoft) claims he has customers while Schmidt (Google) has only users. It is a valid argument. Gates has a 'revenue model' that is embedded into the Microsoft presence. Shcmidt has a 'revenue model' which is separated from yet attached to the 'free search' transactions Google provides its users. What is the potential for the revenue models of MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc to grow into the future?

Lee Scott, CEO of Wal-Mart, aims to shop the community. If the community includes unions, environmentalists, and same sex couples then Wal-Mart is simply acting as a mirror. When the community changes so will Wal-Mart. So change the storyline for American Communities and you will also change the storyline for Wal-Mart. Simple really isn't it?
