My opinion, leader must be brainy. Yeah.. you know why

That company is very successful who's efficiency (output/input) is good i.e 70% to 80% which is only possible if the staff is efficient and that is only possible if they are happy with the company (i.e taking care of them, understanding them, etc) and which in turn is the duty of quality leader to look in these matter and keep the staff satisfied.

this is what I'm doing. Imagining that I had all the money in the world given to me to do exactly what I want to do with my business. Sky's the limit. What would I do. Where would I be going. Who would I be talking to. How would it work. Forget profits. Forget everything else. Just from the heart. What does this passion look like in flight? AND THEN I'll go okay so how can I get ROI, how will it make money. Passion first. It's radical. May be ludicrous but that's what I'm going to do.

A leader must make everyone else better at their job. That is done by setting a clear direction and removing obstacles that slow people down.

The leaders role is to craft a vision and build a team of people to achieve organizations vision while they achieve their personal vision.

I see a leader's role as crafting a vision and then unleashing the unique people they have chosen (or been given) to do what the leader could never do alone. I agree with David that how a leader communicates the vision is essential - esp. since the best leaders are those who have learned how to serve, and part of the way leaders serve people is by communicating the vision in a way that people can take hold of it.

One of the best aspects of this particular question is that I didn't even ask it - it was what Sean thought the important question should be. (I was holding the flip camera and ticking through questions.) And of course, he was right - focus and clarity of purpose is always key. His answer was so compelling that we built a module around it, which in a way, is a pretty important statement about leadership itself.

A leader is the one who sees the big picture and is able to lay a path to reach that goal. They do not need to accomplish every task themselves but they do need to communicate that path to the rest of the organization. It is their responsibility to make sure that the organization is heading down the right path. They are also there to help facilitate the rest of the team's ability to get their jobs done.

Leader gives a vision and other follow his or her policies to achieve goal. Leadership is not something which you can buy or transfer.

I just read some research about "sense making" and "sense giving". They mean what they sound like and so I woul add to Maloney by saying that a leader not only communicates that vision but seeks to catalyze his followers by empowering them to contribute to that vision.

I think that Sean Maloney hit the nail on the head with his response. Most people are looking for leadership and will willingly follow a person with an ability to see the big picture and develop a vision for success. I would only add that a "great" leader can also communicate that vision clearly and effectively such that the followers know their role in pursuing that vision.
