I like the comment by Scott below: "the final product will be loyalty and an organization that can flourish even in the toughest economic times." In the past few months I have had first hand experience with organizations that are cutting staff and cutting development programs. Instead of looking at this solely as a negative and "tough" time for the organization, organizations should look at it as a chance to give employees (regardless of where they sit in the org.) opportunities to work on key objectives. It's time to be creative.

It is impressive to see real leadership in people. Too many managers think they are leaders simply because they have the biggest office or the head position. That has nothing to do with real leadership and you can see it in people like Craig. He is not worried about impressing people or being the hero getting all the glory. He wants his people to succeed and in doing so the company succeeds. You have to give people the chance to show their potential and then facilitate their growth. The final product will be loyalty and an organization that can flourish even in the toughest economic times.

Creating the next generation of leaders is what attracting and retaining talent is all about. And Craig really touched on this in his response. What impressed me with Craig's answer was that he framed his opening as "how do you nurture LEADERSHIP," not just "talent." He wants people to succeed and gives them the opportunity to do so. What a great management philosophy and what a great human response from a CEO! Bravo!
