CEO Mulally is spot-on in his appraisal of leadership and how it has changed. As he aptly points out, it has broadened, and so have customers expectations and their ability to get information. Knowledge about a company, its executives and its products is now globally made available with the click of a mouse. Within that knowledge context, Mulally seems to have his thumb on the pulse when he said, "know where you're going..." I would add, and let teams and customers know where you're going and why. That kind of clarity links to a CEO's vision. The CEO has to have his/her eye on the prize and know how to articulate that vision internally as well as to the newly educated customer base. As an executive coach, I've seen far too many CEOs NOT have the clarity and focus of Mr. Mulally and their personal brands and company brands have suffered.
