You are correct sir. I'd take it a step farther and invite input toward the solution. It doesn't mean you have take the advice or suggestion, but people feel less damaged by bad news when they have some input to the repair.

Think about how differently the housing bubble/foreclosure disaster would have gone if lenders would have worked with borrowers on solutions instead of driving working, viable customers into foreclosure.

Bad news is difficult to deliver- you must be direct and to the point and committed to your end result. Goal of communication is understanding - a well crafted message with supporting facts is helpful- don't con people- truth is important- in designing your communication consider who needs to know on a one on one basis, small gruops next and then larger groups- limit the rumor mill with a well developed plan.
