If you could have one business superpower, what would it be?
As President of Sony Online Entertainment LLC (SOE), John Smedley oversees the
company’s overall vision and growth, and proactively seeks ways to stay ahead of the
industry curve. Within the last year, Smedley has led SOE’s company-wide transition to a
free-to-play business model, which established SOE as a pioneer and leader in the online
games sphere.
Under Smedley’s visionary leadership, SOE has grown from a small developer with
a single online PC game to a global industry leader with millions of subscribers and
multiple titles published on PC, Mac, PlayStation® computer entertainment system,
PlayStation® Vita, PSP® system, wireless and handheld platforms. SOE has formed
beneficial partnerships in Europe, Asia and Russia through Smedley’s guidance, which in
turn has increased diversity among players, and has added to the exponential growth in
both population and profits that SOE has experienced over the past couple of years.
Smedley, also known as “Smed,” has more than a decade of experience in the
interactive entertainment industry. Prior to his current role as President of Sony Online
Entertainment, he worked at ATG, Knight Technologies and also served as Director
of Development at SOE for five years. Smedley was instrumental in the creation and
development of the original, groundbreaking massively multiplayer online game,
EverQuest®, and was co-founder of Verant Interactive Inc., which became Sony Online
Entertainment after it was purchased by Sony Pictures Entertainment in 2000.
Smedley is an avid gamer who enjoys first-person shooters. He also plays acoustic guitar
during his personal time.
