No matter what you do for a living, design matters. Meet and learn from 20 visionary men and women who are using design to create not just new products, but new ways of working, leading, and seeing.
For design, like business, is all about solving problems. The result, as Roger Martin observes, is that "design skills and business skills are converging." Every design process confronts a time problem, a material problem, and a function problem. And there are problems that spill over into the wider world of sales and marketing: What's the first point of customer contact? Where is the product sold? And what does the design do for the brand? The implications are clear: Design matters--to all of us.
And so, as you meet our 20 masters, think about this question: What's your design--for work and for life?
- Peak Performers: Four masters who are leading the world of design
-
- Impact Players: Four high-impact projects that shaped the year in design--and the people who launched them
-
- William McDonough, Principal and founder, William McDonough + Partners
- Tom Ford , Former Creative Director, Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent
- Jonathan Ive, Vice President of Industrial Design, Apple Computer Inc.
- Marcia Lausen, Founding member, AIGA Design for Democracy
- Game Changers: The risk takers and agitators who are rewriting the rules
-
- Collaborators: Champions who help make great design happen
-
- Robyn Waters, Founder and president of RW Trend, LLC
- Kun-Hee Lee, Chairman and CEO, Samsung electronics
- Sam Farber, Founder, Copco, OXO, and Wovo
- Bob Porter, Executive Vice President, SSM Health Care
- Next Generation: Meet four rising stars who are charting the future
-
- A Jury of Their Peers
- Introducing 11 jurors--top leaders from universities, cultural institutions, and business--who helped us select our 20 Masters of Design.
- Lessons From the Masters
- These five ideas will help you incorporate design principles in your work -- and better connect with customers and colleagues.

It seems that the innovation of these companies are really shaping the future - more now since there is an influx of 'small' companies and less power from the power players of the fields. - Jennifer of financial marketing.

I like the concept of fashioning products for individuals and not for retailers. Although obvious, I believe this is something that is often forgotten. - Michael Pillsbury

Of course. Design is a wide topic which includes decision, bravery, and creativity. I once wanted to be fashion designer and interior designer, lol. But I took financial management at college and it's fine. Life keeps going, I can continue learning anytime.

I have long wished to study Design, especially in fashion and/or Interior. But I went for Financial Management anyway. Now I am a Bachelor of Economics. I still hope that I can learn design one day later.

I don't plan to take Master's degree. Bachelor is enough, at least for the moment. I am focus more on earning good money as soon as possible, so that I can build my own business.

Master of Design sounds like a cool degree. I am a Bachelor of Economics and sometimes i feel that there are too many people like me in the world. However, I believe that every Bachelor has hie/her own strengths and weaknesses.

Considering taking the further study to Master's degree is not an easy decision. While we want to get better position in career by obtaining higher degree, there is opportunity cost for the years passed without working fully.

Studying design is more about teaching yourself. Lecturers are just companion or ones who provide you with theories.

Unlike in my country, the Design major is not much respected here. Unless you take Design majors that are related to technology such as Graphic Design. It doesn't sound to have good prospect.

I love reading your magazine. There was an ad on Tax Relief a while ago that I saw and actually used. There is so much information in your magazine I love it. There was also something about overcoming panic attacks that I read as well which helped me out for sure.

I had a case of bad credit in 1992 and wanted to buy a home. When I went to my local bank the mortgage officer told me I had to get good credit, use a free credit dispute from or fix all the errors on my report. When I tried to contact Free Equifax credit report, Free Experian credit report and Free Trans Union credit report, but I found them impossible to contact. They seemed to try to hide the phone numbers addresses and company information so I made some web pages with contact info. Then I posted all the Free Credit Help things I did to fix errors and raise my credit score fast quickly free.
