The arts may often be associated with money and power, but the Mile-High City's Five by Five program opens the doors of Denver's cultural institutions to some of its youngest and poorest residents. Five by Five gives all children and families in the Head Start program free access to 12 museums and cultural venues, including the Denver Art Museum, Colorado Ballet, and the Denver Museum of Nature and Science. In 2008, 3,000 participating families clocked 30,000 visits. "Eliminate the barriers to accessing culture, and our families will show up," says executive director Maria Guajardo. "As one father told me: 'I feel like the city belongs to me now.' "

With a new addition to the old building, the Denver Art Museum is a great place to spend looking at contemporary art from all over the world in a very nice atmosphere.
In addition to all the beautiful paintings and sculptures to look at, the DAM is made to be very interactive for grown ups as well as children. There are a lot of activities to make this trip to the Denver Art Museum an enjoyable one for the entire family. There are movies, games and stations for kids to create their own art and learn more about it.
In fact, there was one part of the exhibition where you enter a dark room. On the floor you could see bubbles projected from a computer screen in the ceiling above. You have a short amount of time to "pop" the bubbles (by jumping on them on the floor, which somehow the computer recognized the movement and force of the jump) to create a work of art that would be projected in the wall-screen in front of the room. If you did not "pop" the bubbles fast enough, the art will disappear and you will have to start from the beginning... well, lets just say that the three grown-ups (one of them being me) shun the kid "popping" bubbles and we jumped in the action. The kid ran to his father almost in tears while we were jumping like crazy all around the room. I felt bad... but we had a good time! Sorry kid...

It is wonderful when the state takes care of the children, the children's education. Can a child free visit a museum, exhibition, spend time with the benefit of the child. Unfortunately, in many countries, these social programs are not implemented. By Mokko

The Denver Art Museum is the largest art museum between Kansas City and the West Coast, with over 55,000 works of art, including an internationally renowned American Indian collection and superb holdings of pre-Columbian and Spanish Colonial art.
Departments include Architecture, Design & Graphics; Asian; Modern & Contemporary; Native Arts; New World (Pre-Columbian and Spanish Colonial); Painting & Sculpture (European and American), Western art and Textile Art. Architect Gio Ponti of Italy designed the Denver Art Museum's current striking building--a work of art in itself. A new building designed by internationally renowned architect Daniel Libeskind is scheduled to open in 2006.
