-Vice Admiral Nancy Brown
Adviser to the Joint Chiefs of Staff
In the future, technology will be both the means of waging war and the key to keeping peace. Brown has literally written the book: Her Joint Net-Centric Operations Campaign Plan is the strategy to "better integrate and synchronize joint community transformation and maximize joint warfighting capabilities." Sit up straight when you read that, soldier.
-Helen Grenier
iRobot
Grenier has done more than anyone to bring the power of robots to the U.S. military. Though she resigned as chair in October, Grenier remains on the board of iRobot, whose stair-climbing, video-shooting PackBot has already made our soldiers safer and more effective.
-Susan Landau
Sun Microsystems
When she isn't talking about number theory and computational algebra (and who isn't these days?), Landau is a leading researcher and expert on wiretapping, computer encryption, and security issues.
-Esther Takeuchi
University at Buffalo
Takeuchi holds more patents than any other American woman. After 23 years at Greatbatch -- where, among other feats, she invented the battery used in the implantable defibrillator -- she now runs an academic research program.
-Jill Tarter
SETI Institute
Sure, the Jodie Foster role in Contact was based on her, but Tarter's current adventure is operating the new Allen Telescope Array, a massive intergalactic search tool that will speed innovation in communications, GPS technology, weather, and defense. And maybe find E.T.

I am not sure what brainiac means either so I am interested to see what others will add to the thread still. My feeling is that it is selected as a turn off by people who are threatened by someone smarter, and a turn on to those looking for an intelligent partner, so the definition will be different for different people. I have met know-it-alls that I most certainly would not describe as brainiacs--they are usually people who are insecure about their relative intelligence and feel the need to prove it.

Sometime brainiacs just talk too much, know too much, and a person wonders why they are in the conversation at all if they have nothing to contribute.

Is it just me or does anyone else cringe just a tiny bit to see that the top two women on the "brainiac" list work in or for the military? Stair climbing robots that can kill without risking "our" soldiers...whoa...Have these women been playing the same dehumanizing, violent video games used to pump up the recruits? And how about Ms. #1 on the list whose accomplishments include "maximizing joint war fighting capabilities"?
Where are the smart women who are using technology to create a more life-sustaining world? Or is that too much to ask from a technology oriented segment of society bent on reforming life into a more mechanized model?

Women and technology. Th combination sounds impossible if you heard this decades ago. But we have proven our powers nowadays. Hopefully the trend will go more rapidly and more women have access to higher education.

It's good to see that it's not just men who are involved in technology. I found an old recipe book from the 1950's that had an advert which said "it's so good no wonder people are saying "it could have been invented by woman.""

From the article:
We inadvertently ignited a firestorm late last year when we posted a story on fastcompany.com called "The Most Influential Women in Web 2.0." The post became the subject of heated debate on the user-recommendation site Digg, as well as on our own site. While some comments focused on the accomplishments of the women chosen, or suggested others we might have named, many were graphic, sexist, and nasty. Two dozen of the posters were eventually thrown off of Digg by the site's administrators.

You can tell who are the misogynists in these comments. Don't be an idiot and interpret the phrase "equal rights" literally. People like you (you know who you are) are quick to turn that meaning around and put it up against women. This article was written to give women the opportunity to share the limelight with men. Technology, science and engineering is mostly a man's world, and women are still struggling to find their place in that industry. Honestly, I didn't even know who these women are until after I read the article. But if you mention Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg, Kevin Rose...I know right away who they are because they are the "big dogs" in the technological industry.
And by the way, men have breasts too.
