March 2000 Flash Points

Here are some of the questions that popped in to my head as I read:

Built to Flip (p. 131) FC article

* Has the New Economy 'engendered an entitlement culture in which the mediocre flourish'?
* Is venture capital culture at the base of the built to flip mentality?
* Jim Collins outlines two categories of companies that should not be built to last. Are they valid and
existing types of business? Should they be built to flip? What are some new economy examples of these kinds of businesses?
* Should people take jobs and pursue work with companies that are built to flip? What does it mean in terms of finding rewarding work to reach for the gold ring of a hot pre-IPO company? Should you gamble your skills?

Built to Flip: Where Do You Come Down? (p. 144) FC article

* Is Steve Jurvetson right when he says, 'Built to Flip is an oxymoron'?
* Is venture capital culture clean and clear of the push to build to flip, as Jurvetson suggests? Are network effects such as partnering the real primary drivers of this development?
* Is Christina Darwall spot on when she says that, 'Most of us connect 'long-term' with 'good' and 'short-term' with 'bad''?
* Gary Sutton says that sustainable businesses lose a lot of money, become mediocre, don't innovate, and are unproductive. What's up with that?
* Should Eloan have sold out?

Do You Have the Will to Lead? (p. 222) FC article

* What can I do to understand myself better? What can I do to help other people understand themselves better?
* What habits of thought and action do I need and want to change? How can I do so?
* If the ability to manage polarity is the central attribute of leadership, how can I develop that skill? Is handling polarity the most important thing leaders do? Is the concept of polarity the best approach to decision making and choices - or is leading more complex?
* Where am I in terms of developing the four dimensions of leadership: vision, reality, ethics, and courage? How can I continue to develop them together?

Fast Pack 2000 (p. 234) FC article

* How do you bring hope to inner cities on a scale that touches as many lives as possible?
* How can you sustain innovation regardless of the size of your company?
* How do you create a culture of grassroots leadership?
* What's the best way to think about and participate in the New Economy? What's it all mean?
