February 2002 Next Steps

  • In Are You On The Bus?, Daniel Pink describes the film 'The Journey,' in which Eric Saperston travels the country interviewing business leaders. Arrange a screening of the the film at a group meeting. Like Saperston, cold-call a well-known business leader in your area and invite him or her to your next gorup meeting. Also try an actor or politician. If there is a common grievance against a certain business leader in your community, arrange a visit to their office a la Roger & Me and see what happens.
  • Go brand hunting in your area to determine which brands are broken. Consider the pull of the following: Nike, Starbucks, Gap, and Pottery Barn. Which of these still allure your group, which are past their day? What brands and products do you believe are on the rise?

Is it possible for a product to be 'over-branded'? Point out instances of co-branding and places where two companies could benefit from co-branding.

  • Courage. It ain't just about the cowardly lion anymore. Go on a courage-finding hunt to conquer the personal fears of your group. Write down your fears as a group and pick a few that apply to most people there. If it's public-speaking, arrange for everyone to give a speech at future meetings. If it's heights go out to the largest ferris wheel in your city.
  • Expand on the idea that courage is a virtue that allows you to face real risk. Visit a local war museum or this virtual one and discuss courage under the duress of battle. Relate historical acts of courage to contemporary ones. What role does courage play in your business? Invite a local CEO to talk about what courageous move he or she has had to make.
