January 2004 Next Steps

Jeffrey Sachs is a leader in corporate and social responsibility. Compare what the companies represented in your group do to give back to the community, and see if you can arrange a corporate or CoF outing to do some weekend philanthropy. Whether you choose to tutor, clean up an urban area, or work at a shelter among others, ask the people you are there to help what their impression is of the local business community and how it could improve its image. Do your group members think business is still in touch with its sense of giving back? How does your business reach outside the community to a state, national, or even international level, depending on its size?

San Diego is becoming the wireless capital of the nation. Have your group test how wireless your city is by simulating one member's typical weekday or weekend. Where does this person use wireless now, where could this person be using wireless more, and where would they want wireless to be available? How could your group members use wireless technology to improve their jobs much like the real estate agent in the story did? On your day trip, stop by hotels, restaurants, and department stores on the way and observe if the sales staff on the floor or any level of management is using wireless inventory or sales technology. If so, is it obviously changing the customer experience?
