The Fast Company 50 - 2009

Apple

Cupertino, CA

Now that Steve Jobs has taken a medical leave, rumors are flying. But if Jobs's own health is in question, his company remains a force to be reckoned with. Here's how Apple asserted its dominance in 2008.

  1. iPhone Envy
With sales booming, Apple turned the smartphone concept from a businessperson's badge into a cool tool for everyone. More than 13 million iPhones were sold in the first 15 months.
  2. Welcome to the App Store
After resisting the open-source movement for years, Apple abruptly reversed course, inviting developers (under strict terms, naturally) to create programs for the iPhone. The move echoes the successful iPod-iTunes ecosystem and has yielded a burst of new functionality -- plus a new source of revenue.
  3. Pretty Little Boxes
Whether it's the superthin Air, the new unibody aluminum MacBook, or the sleekly updated iPod Touch, Apple continues to prove that it delivers a lust-worthy design aesthetic that has competitors playing catch-up.
  4. Green Spin
Consumer electronics aren't likely to save the planet, but Apple at least took a shot at purifying -- and image buffing -- with recyclable laptop casings, arsenic- and lead-free screens, and reduced packaging.
  5. The Song Remains the Same
Despite challenges from all comers, iTunes remains the dominant player in the only growing part of the music business: digital downloads. And copyright restrictions are now history.

Undoubtedly apple did a “blast of change” with their applications especially with iPhone and features. It was difficult to carry all your gadgets along, like laptop, mobile phone, notebooks, iPod etc, but apple put basic and most utilized functionalities of all these gadgets come up with an ultra tech machine called “iPhone”. In my opinion one can never be bored with an iPhone. It has really great features like iPod, iTunes, Wi-Fi and ultimate multi touch technology that makes the iPhone use to that level of use friendliness that it doesn't require a search feature in its phone list, one can easily scroll up and sown to find required contact. Besides this, one can save GBs of data in it. Different iPhone apps, which further enhance the iPhone functionality, is fast becoming an industry itself. My favorite app for the time being is latest game released by EA Games, need for speed undercover. However, there are a lot of business apps which makes this iPhone a real purposeful PDA for business men. Along with all these great features about apple iPhone I faced a few difficulties regarding compatibility of iPhone accessories first generation with the iphone 3G, message forwarding, video recording and Bluetooth file transfer. But now Apple has including message forwarding and video recording feature in its latest firmware and I am pretty sure that Bluetooth file transfer software will be provided pretty soon.

Thanks,
Ronnie Williams

Apple will be the dominant force with or without Jobs. There was a rumor about Cool Springs getting an Apple store even though there is one in Green Hills, about 15 minutes away. The area would support having two given the wealth and density of Apple users with the music and publishing industry in Nashville.
