The big idea: In 25 words or less, please tell us how this Fast 50 Nominee is helping to address the planet's problems.
4Home delivers an open platform for the home that enables digital services, giving people more control over their energy consumption, their health, and their lives.
Please describe how this nominee is using business as a force of positive change. What technology, idea, or strategy is the nominee using -- and what problem, such as global warming, poverty, or pollution, does it address? (suggested length: 100 words)
4Home is taking broadband internet to power of the home network, harnessing this channel to give people digital services that they can use to proactively manage their personal health and home energy usage. By creating an open platform through which these next-generation services can be delivered, 4Home is making its innovation accessible to the world, serving as a catalyst for advances in healthcare administration, the more intelligent use of domestic energy, and more.
4Home’s platform essentially serves as a gateway for the delivery of next generation services into the home. While these digital services have obvious consumer benefits and are a natural evolution of phone, television and data services in the Internet age, a major challenge was getting businesses to buy into them and generate the demand and infrastructure to sustain it. 4Home realized that the only way that these services would make it to people’s homes if its service platform took on an open model, allowing anyone to develop new applications and services, customize them for use on any device, and profit from it.
What are the results, both financial and social? How has the nominee's business performed, and what impact has it had on the problem it addresses? (suggested length: 100 words)
4Home has successfully pioneered the market for next-generation broadband services and its solution has met with widespread acclaim. By bringing major service providers, software developers and hardware manufacturers on-board, 4Home has nearly made these services a reality for consumers and has become profitable through the adoption of its platform technology.
While the services have yet to be delivered, the market that 4Home has created for them has in itself shed light on what is possible with today’s advanced home networks. Healthcare organizations, energy providers and other institutions now have cause to evaluate the positive impact that these services can have on people’s standards of living, on the environment and on their businesses.
