Twitter gives you the choice to tell others what you want them to know. Sending an update via your phone (sms) or online (web) and having others know what you're up to is gratifying. Another reason is: people are bored online. There is not much to do, we are constantly seeking out new things.
Although it seems like a popular idea, I don't see how Twitter expects to monetize this application "service."
