In my experience, I've known people to think of themselves as designers because they know how to use a design software application. In my opinion, that doesn't automatically qualify a person as a "designer". Many of us designers spent years studying design principles, theory, history, and application and have invested our blood, sweat and tears, not to mention time and money into becoming professional designers. And I think in many cases it shows in the quality of the end result. So, like many other things in life, I think you should get what you pay for. I think it should cost more for something well-designed.
