Discussing the Book of the Month

June 2004 - Ideas are Free: How the Idea Revolution is Liberating People and Transforming Organizations

Scottish shipbuilder William Denny put up the world's first industrial suggestion box in 1886, and thousands of companies have since followed suit. Most of us know what happens to the slips of paper inside them -- and that's the shame. "Every day, millions of working people see problems and opportunities that their managers do not," the authors write. The book presents an outline for establishing an idea-generation program in virtually any workplace.

Discussion Questions

  1. Does your company have a formal program to encourage ideas, or is it something that is allowed to happen spontaneously?
  2. What can management do to foster an environment for the creative exchange of ideas? What can you do?
  3. Why would people offer ideas without the prospect of rewards? What's in it for them?
  4. Managers often look for "home run" ideas, but the authors say it is generally the small ideas that are easier to implement and measure. Do you agree? Can you give an example?
